Drug Uses
Trecator–sc is used for treatment of tuberculosis (TB) infections in combination with other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
How Taken
Use Trecator–sc as directed by your doctor. Take Trecator–sc with or without a meal. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation. Trecator–sc should be taken in combination with other medicines.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Trecator–sc, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Trecator–sc, if you have diabetes, liver problems, or vision problems, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. – If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Trecator–sc during pregnancy. It is unknown if Trecator–sc is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast–feeding while you are using Trecator–sc, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby. Some medicines may interact with Trecator–sc. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness (eg, sedatives, tranquilizers) while taking Trecator–sc. Trecator–sc may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Trecator–sc. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. Trecator–sc is effective only against bacteria. It is not effective for treating viral infections (eg, the common cold). It is important to use Trecator–sc for the full course of treatment. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of Trecator–sc and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Trecator–sc and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future. You may be required to take a vitamin B supplement while taking Trecator–sc. Trecator–sc may affect your blood sugar. If you are a diabetic, check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine. Trecator–sc should not be used in children younger than 12 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed. In some cases, use in children may be warranted if other medicines are not effective or are not tolerated.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are– Diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and increased salivation, loss of appetite, metallic taste, mouth sores, nausea, restlessness, stomach pain, vomiting, and weight loss. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately– allergic reactions (rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), change in sense of smell, depression, easy bruising or bleeding, low blood sugar (eg, increased heartbeat, headache, chills, sweating, tremor, increased hunger, changes in vision, nervousness, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting), tingling of hands or feet, vision changes (eg, loss of vision), yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Storage
Store Trecator–sc at 68 – 77 °F (20 – 25 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Trecator–sc out of the reach of children.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately.
More Information
Trecator–sc may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. These effects may worsen if Trecator–sc is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Trecator–sc with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Trecator–sc should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
